OUR STORY

We pulled a Blue RGB Mew on launch day. It came back a PSA 10.

The fifth pack we opened on launch day had a Mew in it that neither of us recognized. Blue background, green Mew, red text. Where the card number should be, it just said B/RGB.

My daughter Lila is 7, and she's the reason I got back into Pokémon. This is the story of the best pack either of us will probably ever open.

Launch day

On September 16, launch day for 30th Celebration, I got in line at our local Target about 40 minutes before they opened. I was number 36. They were allowing one ETB per person and two of everything else, so I came home with two Knockout Collections, two Tech Sticker Collections, two Poster Collections and a Sylveon ex box.

I didn't open a thing. I lined it all up on the dining room table so Lila would see it when she got home from school.

When she walked in we set up a binder for the master set, opened the Dex app to scan everything, and started pack battling. Commons in one pile, Pikachus in another, full arts in a third.

The fifth pack came out of a Knockout Collection.

“What is this?”

We both just stared at it. It wasn't in the booklet, and none of the apps could find it. We hadn't heard any of the rumors.

So I looked it up on Google and X and found the whole mystery that had been building before release. Then I saw a post saying one had sold on eBay for $20,000 about an hour before we pulled ours.

That's when it hit us, and we lost it.

My wife said sell it immediately. Lila was not having it. She keeps all of her hits, and she got really upset, so we told her we were only joking. We weren't totally joking. But it stayed.

A mirage

The bottom of the card says it's “so rare that it is still said to be a mirage by many experts. Only a few people have seen it worldwide.”

That first week, it felt true. I took it into a couple of local card shops and they were shocked to see one. That weekend we went to a card show and ours was the only one there. Every vendor we showed it to was amazed just to see one in person.

Our first PSA submission

We had never graded a card, so this felt like the right one for Lila and me to send in together. I wasn't sure which service to pick. After asking around I went with Super Express and submitted online. That was $349.

  • PSA received it: September 25
  • Grade posted in the app: October 12

The last day had a surprise. On October 12 the submission suddenly showed an account hold, and then an email came in with a revised price: $599. I'd already paid $349 for Super Express, so that caught me off guard. I paid it right away so they'd finish the submission, but it felt a bit like paying a ransom to see the grade.

If you're sending in a card like this, know that the price can go up after PSA sees what it is.

I waited until I got home so we could do the reveal together. Lila swiped to flip the card over on the screen and saw the 10. She screamed and ran around the house yelling “We got a PSA 10!” and “I can't believe we did that!”

When ours came back, PSA had graded 16 English B/RGB Mews at 10.

Are we selling?

That night, right before bed, Lila told me: “I'm never ever going to sell my RGB Mew. It's my possession, so I decide what I want to do with it.”

So that's settled. It's hers.

I loved Pokémon when I was a kid. Watching her love it the same way, and getting to enjoy it again with her, is the best part of all this.

Update: it's home

The slab showed up on October 19, and Lila got to hold it first. She looked at it for a while and then announced: “This is going to be my college fund.”

A week ago she was never going to sell it. Now it's paying for college. Either way, it's still hers to decide.

A lot more 10s have come back since ours. PSA has now graded 47 English B/RGB Mews at 10, up from 16 a week earlier, and about half of everything it has graded so far got a 10.

If you're curious what these go for now, raw and graded, that's on the B/RGB page.
